What it is

Malanga (yautía, tannia) looks like taro and elephant ear, with leaves about 2 by 2½ feet, and can reach 5 feet or more. Edible cormels form in a cluster around a big central corm.

Why grow/eat it

No source found

How to use it

Wash and peel the tubers (very hard ones need cooking first), then bake, mash or fry them like potatoes. The leaves are also eaten as greens.

UF/IFAS EDIS HS623

Harvest in Houston

Start it in spring. It needs 9 to 10 months to mature (Florida guidance).

Container tips

Plant the top, whole tuber, tuber pieces or side tubers 3 to 5 inches deep. Give it steady moisture with good drainage.

Cautions

Frost injures it. Tubers only keep a few weeks at room temperature, longer refrigerated at 45°F.
