Look out for (Houston)

Young plants hurt near 30°F

PFAF

What it is

An evergreen shrub or tree in the holly family, native from Brazil to northeastern Argentina. It's usually hardy outdoors in zone 9 and warmer.

PFAF

Why grow/eat it

It's one of the world's big caffeine plants, the source of mate tea. It's grown for tea, not as a food plant.

PFAF

How to use it

Dry the leaves and young twigs and steep them in hot (not boiling) water. Mate tastes grassy, earthy and a little bitter.

PFAF

Harvest in Houston

Pick young leaves and tender twigs from established plants while they're growing, then dry them well. Pruning encourages new leafy growth.

PFAF

Container tips

Likes well-drained, moist soil and part shade or full sun. It grows in sandy, loamy or clay soil.

PFAF

Cautions

It contains caffeine, so enjoy it in moderation, especially if you're sensitive to stimulants or pregnant. Other hollies look similar but aren't the same, so make sure the plant is correctly identified.
